Day 61 - Hectic Life, Epic Ride

So, as many of you may know, I am leaving for Chicago today, in fact, in about 9 hours from now. Why am I not asleep you ask? Because I still have FOUR more hours of work left before I go home and snag four hours of sleep and then ride in a car for nine hours after that, big ugh right there. BUT, I am sure I will be so excited that it won't matter once the adrenaline starts flowing.

So today I was like a chicken with my head cut off trying to finalize details for the trip, but I made sure that I worked in the time to get some fitness in too.

7am - Off work
8am - Home, sleepytime USA
2pm - Uggh, I'm up
2:30pm - Mmmm, 100% whole wheat pancakes with sugar free syrup
2:45pm - Homework time
3:30pm - FITNESS TIME

-- Today I decided to jump on my new bike and really give it a proper test. The furthest I'd ridden it before today was a quick 10 miles, so today I decided I'd hammer out the entire bike trail (21 miles).

The first mile was just getting TOO the bike trail, which meant dealing with 12th street traffic, which I despise. Once I dropped onto the bike trail I felt free. I quickly found my cadence and held a pretty quick clip (15mph average) over the first 4 miles. Once the path turned up near 60th street I was met with what I call the 'Prairie Gusts of DOOM'. For the next 2.5 miles I was riding directly into the wind. Now, this wouldn't be that bad if I were riding a tri bike with aerobars or a road bike with drop bars.. nope, I'm riding a Commuter bike on winter mountain bike tires. Dear god, those 2.5 miles nearly killed me.

The best part about the bike trail (when you go the direction I was) is that you get to ZOOOOOM down the big hill by John Morrells. I pegged it out (ie top speed) at 39.2mph on that downhill stretch. It helped to make up for the 9.2mph I averaged through the Prairie Gusts of DOOM. Right after the big downhill comes my very least favorite part of the bike trail, Falls Park.

Falls Park is a beautiful place, but dear god cycling up that sidewalk hurts. You see, I am a BIG guy, and gravity is NOT my friend, and this is a good third of a mile incline that just keeps going and going and going. Once I got past it though I regained my legs pretty quick. It was at this point that I looked at the horizon and realized, gosh the sun is setting fast. I checked my cell phone, hmm, I'd made it to the halfway point in 45 minutes, the sun is setting REALLY early.

I started to try and push the pace, but for a couple of miles it just wasn't there. I was holding a steady 12 or 13mph, but my legs were not willing to 'spin' the way I wanted them too. So instead I dropped into a lower gear and just focused on keeping my cadence up until my legs recovered. Around 26th and Cleveland I started feeling a little better and moved back into the middle cog, 12mph.. 13mph.. 14mph.. ah that was more like it. The trails at this part of the bike trail are often covered in foilage and trees and all that jazz, so the trail got dark quick. I knew once I got to 49th and Sertoma I could really hammer it and be home in 20 minutes tops.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, I hit 49th and Sertoma, wait.. what is that? what.. the fuck.. a 'road closed' sign on the bike trail. I don't have time for this.. No posted detours, and it is getting dark out. I'm 4 miles from home, but I can NOT ride on Louise with no headlight (yes, I am a tardo, I didn't have my headlight on my bike). I made a quick decision to ride to the workout partner's house. It was just as far away, but it was on 49th street so less traffic/turns and I could ride the sidewalk that way.

As it got legitamately dark, I pulled into her driveway, she wasn't home. I called her and waited for her to call back, she always does. Luckily she was near her phone so she picked me up and we worked on Chicago Trip stuff before she dropped me back off at home. Note to self: Pick up bike before leaving for Chicago.

By the time I got home I was like insanely famished, because of course I hadn't brought any food with me. I think this was my BEST ride ever, and yet my worst preparedness level ever. All I had with me was my cell, a credit card, and my ID. No spare tubes, no patch kit, no food, no headlight, uggh.

Here's the skinny on the ride:
25 miles total
1 Hour 45 Minutes
2092 Calories Burned
Top Speed: 39.2mph
Average Speed: 14.29mph

I will probably post once while in chicago, but will wait until we get back to post a bunch of pictures and stuff. I hope everyone has a good weekend, and keeps your fingers crossed/me in your thoughts and prayers/all that jazz. This opportunity could make all the difference.

Day 60 - I can totally count again

So, I decided to go ahead and blog tonight, because I am bored to death at work. :)

Today just felt really hectic overall, I'll give a breakdown.

-7am, in bed
-1pm, when I wanted to be out of bed
-2pm, I woke up
-2:30pm, I finally stumbled into the kitchen
-3:00pm, ok, food, mmm tasty
-3:45pm, meeting with workout partner, discuss Chicago details
-4:15pm, workout partner finally shows up, luckily I was waiting at home
-5:00pm, pictures at sertoma park, trying out outfits for this weekend
-5:30pm, back home
-6:00pm, mmm, food, tasty
-7:20pm, roommate home, gym time
-9:00pm, leave gym.. hmm maybe I'll get a nap before work
-9:40pm, just got home, had to stop at walmart
-10:00pm, no time for a nap, i'll just watch ultimate fighter
-10:50pm, oh crap I'm going to be late for work.
-11:01pm, whew, just barely late.

Today was chest/triceps at the gym, and here is the quick and dirty version.

Incline DB Bench Press - 4 sets of 8, 45s, 55s, 60s, 65s
Overhead Tricep Extensions - 4 sets of 8, 100, 115, 130, 160
Machine Bench Press - 4 sets of 8, 175, 190, 205, 235
Tricep Pushdowns (Rope) - 4 sets of 8, 80, 80, 100, 100
Flat DB Bench Press - 4 sets of 8, 45s, 55s, 60s, 65s
Overhead Rope Tricep Extensions - 4 sets of 8, 60, 60, 80, 100

I really felt limited by the equipment at the Satellite Wellness Center, but all in all got in a pretty good workout.

My goal for today is to hit up the bike trail and try to just hammer out the entire bike trail (20ish miles) and then lift with roommate again (legs tonight).

Chicago trip happens in like 30 hours, I'm so freaking stoked.

Day 50something

So I don't know what day it is, since I'm posting from my email. I'm working the late night audit shift at work, so I have tons of time on my hands for the first time in a while (well, since feeling better).

Today was my first full day back to the gym, and dear god it felt great. I did go ahead and weighed in today, and I am bloated a few pounds. I'm not too worried though, I think we all know that I am a machine when I'm not sick, so it and more will be gone soon.

My plan was to cycle to the gym and then swim, but when I got to the gym I realized there were swimming lessons, so I decided to time trial my little ass home. Here is how the ride broke down.

Cycle To Gym
- 5 miles on dirt/gravel trail, average speed 10.0 mph.
Cycle Back Home
- 5 miles on bike trail/12th st, average speed 20.0 mph.

As you can see on the way to the gym it was pretty leisurely, even though it was hard work being on the gravel path. However, once I dropped onto the bike path I saw Greg "Hooterville" on the bike trail, but I don't think he knew who I was so we just exchanged the courtesy nod, and then I hammered it all the way home. The bike path portion was actually a bit faster than 20mph, but once I hit 12th street I had to slow down for safety purposes. When I hit the 3 block incline I decided I'd hammer it for 15 seconds and then spin in a smaller gear. I actually managed to get to the top before my heart rate spiked, was kind of cool not having to change gears and spin.

Once I got home I was shocked at how cold my torso had gotten, apparently I need to really start to watch that top layer, because an UnderArmour base layer and a Hanes long-sleeved shirt isn't acceptable in this weather. I will start adding in the fleece, because I doubt it's time for the jacket just yet. I just loved being back on the bicycle, LOVED IT.

Once the roommate got out of work we headed to the gym, she wanted me to set her up a weight training program. So we went through a full back and biceps workout for her, and wrote down her starting weights and stuff. Since I didn't work out yesterday I figured I'd do the same workout and then tomorrow hit chest and triceps in a grouped workout as well, here is what we did.

Back and Bi's - (ALL her excercises are 4 sets of 10 at the moment, so I am listing mine instead)
Alternating Dumbell Curls - 4 sets of 10 - 20s, 25s, 25s, 30s
Seated Row - 4 sets of 10/8/6/4 - 160, 175, 190, 205
Preacher Curl Machine - 4 sets of 10/8/6/3 (failed last rep) - 70, 85, 100, 130
Lat Pulldowns (shoulder width) - 4 sets of 10 - 110, 130, 150, 170
Concentration Curls - 4 sets of 10/8/6/6 - 20s, 25s, 30s, 35s
Single DB Rows - 4 sets of 10 - 45s, 55s, 65s, 65s (heighest weight they had at the satellite, lol)

No PRs today since these were all on different (and subpar IMO) machines than they have at the main wellness center, but it was good to see the roommate get more active again. Hopefully she'll keep it up.

Aight peeps, I'm outtie. I will be blogging as often as I can, but I'm not going to stress the everyday rule as I believe the quality of the Josh you get is more important than the quality. I miss you guys and will try to catch up on commenting when I can. Rest assured though, I HAVE been reading.

Day 55 - Almost there

** For some reason this didn't post last night, but saved as a draft **

I'm starting to feel better, I'm hoping by Monday morning I will be able to go to the gym and start working off some of this water bloat I've been experiencing. The nose is still running but aside from that I'm feeling pretty good.

Tomorrow I go with my workout partner to go shopping for our interview. I should have pictures to post to let everyone chime in on what I should wear for this thing.

Day 54 - On The Upswing

I want to give a big thank you to 266 for awarding me the 'Significant Milestone' award for my recently reached 10% bodyweight loss. Here is a bit more about the reward.
I'm starting to finally feel better from my recent sick streak. The doctor did forewarn me that I would feel better before I am actually better, so I will continue to take it easy. Most people apparently lose weight when they are sick, but I bloat like a mofo. Because of that I won't be weighing in on Monday, just because I refuse to show a gain that isn't earned, do you know what I mean?

Glad to be back to blogging more than just a few lines, hope to talk to you all soon.

Josh
